André Isoir (20 July 1935 – 20 July 2016) was a French organist. Isoir studied with Édouard Souberbielle (organ) and Germaine Mounier (piano) at the École César Franck and under Rolande Falcinelli at the Conservatoire de Paris where he won the first prizes in organ and improvisation in 1960. Thereafter he won several international organ competitions. In 1965 he won the improvisation competition in St Albans (UK).
Charles Arnould Tournemire (22 January 1870 – 3 or 4 November 1939) was a French composer and organist, notable partly for his improvisations which were often rooted in the music of Gregorian chant. His compositions include eight symphonies (one of them choral), four operas, twelve chamber works and eighteen piano solos; but he is remembered largely for his organ music, the best known being set of pieces L'Orgue Mystique.
Louis Victor Jules Vierne (1870–1937), the Organist of Notre-Dame Cathedral, Paris, was a virtuoso organist and a world-renowned performer. His organ music, especially his Six Symphonies pour Grand Orgue, is widely regarded as the pinnacle of the French Romantic organ repertoire. Having studied with Charles Marie Widor (1844–1937) and having been inspired by César Franck (1822–1890), Vierne studied, developed, and contributed to the renaissance of French organ music at the turn of the 20th century. Of the two, Widor exercised more influence during Vierne’s training and professional career, even though Vierne recalled Franck to be a musical inspiration at an early age. César Franck’s importance can be measured by the significant role he played in French organ music in general. Born in 1822, Franck showed great promise as a pianist, organist, and composer.
