He also spent several years as a performer and soloist for the St. Rose Scarlet Lancers, a drum and bugle corps based in Chelsea. Given a black tuxedo by his father, he started playing gigs when in high school. He enjoyed listening to Herb Pomeroy's band at the time and had a trio that played Horace Silver's music at a local jazz club. In 2001 the Chick Corea New Trio, with Avishai Cohen and Jeff Ballard on bass and drums, respectively, released the album Past, Present & Futures. The 11-song album includes only one standard composition (Fats Waller's "Jitterbug Waltz"). The rest of the tunes are Corea originals. The latter album won the Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Album, Individual or Group. In 2008, the third version of Return to Forever (Corea, keyboards; Stanley Clarke, bass; Lenny White, drums; Al Di Meola, guitar) reunited for a worldwide tour.

The release of Al Rose's third album, Pigeon's Throat, came in December 1999. This followed his critically acclaimed second album, Naked in a Trailer, and his debut release, Information Overload. The musicians used in these projects include the Transcendos and guests such as violinist Steve Gibons, mandolinist Stuart Rosenberg, cellist Diana Parmeter, and the occasional Transcendos organist, Carter Luke. Pigeon's Throat, as with the previous releases, really captures the interplay, the mesmerizing qualities that are found in any of Al Rose's live performances. In concert, Al Rose sometimes presents his music as an acoustic solo, sometimes with just a bassist, as a trio, as a rockin' quartet, and sometimes with the large band he calls the Transcendos. Al Rose's father was a local bassist and violinist in the 1940s, but his parents selected the flute as Al Rose's first instrument.
