Watch The Royal Opera Chorus perform the famous Coro di zingari from Act II scene 1 of Giuseppe Verdi’s 1853 opera. Even for those who have never set foot in an opera house, Verdi’s Anvil Chorus is likely to be a familiar tune. Its rousing tune and rhythmic percussion – including, frequently, anvils played on stage on and off the beat – makes it something of an archetype for a bold, cheery Italian chorus.

Il trovatore" (The Troubadour) opera in four acts by Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi that premiered at the Teatro Apollo in Rome on January 19, 1853. Verdi prepared a revised version in French, Le Trouvère, with added ballet music, which premiered at the Paris Opéra on January 12, 1857. Based on the 1836 play El trovador by Antonio García Gutiérrez, the opera is one of three considered to represent the culmination of Verdi’s artistry to that point.
