MTV Unplugged No. is a live album by American singer and rapper Lauryn Hill. The performance comes from her 2002 MTV Unplugged special recorded on July 21, 2001 at MTV Studios in Times Square, New York City. Hill abandoned the hip hop sounds of her debut album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill (1998) in favor of folk and soul songs she performed with an acoustic guitar. The songs were interspersed with spoken interludes about her personal and artistic struggles.
Album · 2002 · 22 Songs. After the massive success of Lauryn Hill’s 1998 solo debut, it would be nearly four years before the elusive neo-soul icon released her eagerly anticipated second coming. MTV Unplugged No. was a bracing change in tone: an epic live recording of rough-hewn tracks that hover between hip-hop and folk, bridged by unvarnished spoken interludes. From her emotion-fractured voice on I Get Out to the hesitant fingerpicked patterns on I Gotta Find Peace of Mind, it’s hard not to be swept away by Hill’s rawness here. Lauryn Hill.

Critics who claimed to love the liberation and honesty of Miseducation suddenly jumped ship when her truth became too real, too unorthodox. Lauryn Hill’s Unplugged . album was a body of work that arrived far ahead of its time. Sixteen years ago, fans expected the multi-hyphenate superstar to kick in the door with a dynamic follow up to The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill. The record-shattering album racked up an astonishing five Grammys (unheard of for a female artist both black and raised by hip-hop)

Hill, however, was reportedly so unhappy that she withdrew from music for three years. In her absence, her album's smart melange of 1970s soul, reggae and socially conscious hip-hop has proved massively influential. Last year, New Jersey trio City High's hit single What Would You Do?, offered a well-crafted facsimile of Hill's sound.
