In 1990, Emmylou Harris' run of superb mid-'70s albums was over, and she hadn't yet assembled the Nash Ramblers, the acoustic band that gave her music a heady kick-start prior to her first striking collaboration with Daniel Lanois, Wrecking Ball.

With a new duets album out, Emmylou Harris talks about four decades of singing and the reinventions and tradeoffs along the wa. The passage of time is a recurring motif on your new album. Did you and Rodney have that theme in mind when you were choosing material or did it happen organically? It was definitely organic, because we’ve been talking about making this record from the time we became friends in 1974.

The American singer Emmylou Harris has released 26 studio albums (including four albums of collaborations with other artists), three live albums, 11 compilation albums, three video albums, and 70 singles. Emmylou Harris laughs when she’s asked how long her new album of duets with Rodney Crowell has been in the works. Thirty years? she says. Old Yellow Moon, due February 26th, is the latest entry in a long-standing relationship: Harris has been recording Crowell’s songs since Bluebird Wine, the opening track on her 1975 major-label debut, Pieces of the Sky. He played guitar and sang backup in an early incarnation of her Hot Band in the Seventies, and she backed him on his first solo album in 1978.

The second volume of Singin' With Emmylou, a collection of duets and backing vocal appearances by Emmylou Harris, is no barrel scraper. If anything it is even more eclectic than the first. If Volume 1 offered names and historical country music and pop figures, Volume 2 offers the other side of Harris' contributions - some to lesser-known artists, some to artists well outside of the country music confines, and some appearances with grand legends. The set opens with a duet of Harris with Johnny Cash. The song "As Long as I Live" is a Roy Acuff classic.

In 1995, Emmylou Harris was a regular contributor to the original series of the BBC's Transatlantic Sessions; contributing to each of its seven episodes of collaborative live performances by various leading folk and country musicians, who would play music, mostly from Scotland, Ireland, England and North America. According to an interview with Bonnie Tyler by Digital Spy, Harris will be teaming up with her on Tyler's upcoming album. Harris will do backing vocals on a song written and produced by Wayne Warner. A recent solo album, Hard Bargain, was released on the Nonesuch label on April 26, 2011. It reached No. 3 on Billboard's Country Albums chart-her highest-charting album since 1980-and the Top 20 of the Pop Albums chart. PBS host Tavis Smiley interviewed Harris in a program that aired on April 20, 2011.
