Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 23 in F minor, Op. 57 (colloquially known as the Appassionata, meaning "passionate" in Italian) is among the three famous piano sonatas of his middle period (the others being the Waldstein, Op. 53 and Les Adieux, Op. 81a); it was composed during 1804 and 1805, and perhaps 1806, and was dedicated to Count Franz von Brunswick.

All About Ludwig van Beethoven. Information on Beethoven, his life, his music and classical sheet music. This sonata was composed by Beethoven in 1804 and dedicated to count Ferdinand von Waldstein, his first protector in Bonn, the one who arranged for Beethoven to study with Haydn in Vienna. That is why the sonata op. 53 is also known as the Waldstein sonata. Interestingly enough, French music lovers and critics have also named the sonata L’Aurore, as a result of the aesthetical significations of the work: light and serenity. The movements of the sonata can be interpreted as different moments of a day. The first movement is a pleasant yet noisy and roaring day.

It's no secret that Horowitz did not care for Beethoven's clumsy piano writing, was not regarded as a great Beethoven interpreter, and recorded these sonatas merely to satisfy contractual obligations. The exception is the Pathetique, which Horowitz was eager to record. Record company executives were the bane of Horowitz's existence until very late in his career, when he had attained so much notoriety that he could "record the C major scale and it would sell" in the words of Thomas Frost.
