So much of In Spades recalls what makes the Whigs so much fun. It’s unapologetically brash, soulful, seductive, and more sophisticated than naysayers might care to admit. What prevents the record from nearing the realm of Gentlemen or Black Love really begins and ends with Dulli’s vocals. In the past, Dulli’s patented shout-sing has torn holes in the sky and his croon - able to inhabit every emotion across the spectrum for well-adjusted adults (and several not) - has ridden cinematic waves to triumphant crashes. His bandmates and friends have come together to raise money through a series of benefit concerts, and others can help Mr. Rosser cover his medical expenses through the following GoFundMe page.
And so, even though the Afghan Whigs’ second post-reunion album after 2014’s Do to the Beast bolsters their current six-piece lineup with a small army of string and horn players, the most resounding instrument we hear throughout emanates from Dulli’s ravaged throat. But like a master genre filmmaker, he’s always got a couple of new tricks up his sleeves to keep us on our toes
In short, Do to the Beast and In Spades sound more like Dulli's work with his side project the Twilight Singers than the Afghan Whigs, and it's worth noting bassist John Curley is once again the only other Whigs veteran in the lineup (and the absence of guitarist Rick McCollum is a reminder of how fundamental he was to the. group's sound in their heyday)
The Afghan Whigs of In Spades isn’t your father’s Afghan Whigs and isn’t even Do To The Beast’s Afghan Whigs. What they are is a fleeting manifestation of all their former selves as Dulli has transcended the desire to reinvent The Whigs’ wheels, he simply remembers its past as it was. With any decades-old band recently reunited, it’s impossible to ignore the question of whether what we’ve last heard is the last we will ever hear of them. Regardless, In Spades sees Greg Dulli synthesizing all of his musical and thematic elements seemingly into everything he’s ever wanted.
The Afghan Whigs reunited five years ago, and two years after that, the sleazed-out Ohio soul-rockers came back with Do To The Beast, their first album in nearly two decades. Now, another few years and a couple reissues later, they’re back again with a new one called In Spades. We’ve already heard early singles Demon In Profile, Arabian Heights, and Oriole, and the rest of the LP continues to cut the band’s rock ‘n’ roll swagger with frontman Greg Dulli’s Twilight Singers side via a healthy dose of atmospheric orchestration.
The Afghan Whigs have just announced a new album. On May 5, the band will release In Spades via Sub Pop. Today they’ve released a new video for first single Demon In Profile, which you can stream below. It’s a spooky record, says the band’s frontman, Greg Dulli, in a press release. I like that it’s veiled. It’s not a concept album per se, but as I began to assemble it, I saw an arc and followed it. To me it’s about memory – in particular, how quickly life and memory can blur together. The Afghan Whigs In Spades tracklist: 1. Birdland 2. Arabian Heights 3. Demon in Profile 4. Toy Automatic 5.
