The Action - Shadows And Reflections mp3 album
The Action At Abbey Road: Stereo Mixes And Outtakes. I'll Keep Holding On. Written-By – Ivy Hunter, William Stevenson.
The Action are one of the great "lost" bands of mid-'60s England. Though they filled mod clubs with happy patrons and managed to score George Martin as a benefactor, they only released a handful of unsuccessful singles during their brief existence. After years of reissues that only told part of the band's story, Grapefruit's 2018 Shadows and Reflections: The Complete Recordings 1964-1968 collects everything: their five officially released singles, BBC sessions, their legendary demos from 1967, backing tracks, alternate takes, different mixes, and songs they recorded just before the band broke up in 1968.
Sixties Mod band THE ACTION only released six singles in their lifetime – or seven, if you count a pre-Action single by The Boys – but their legend has grown exponentially since their demise in 1968. The final single Shadows And Reflections proved that they could cut it during the Flower Power phase and Come On, Come With Me is bright and bouncy, with alternately acoustic and jangly touches. I will say on occasion there seems to be a little too much going on, the over-elaborations grafted on by production not always able to be squared with the natural fire of the band. The third disc presented on Shadows And Reflections shows the Action in this metamorphosis, a change that would eventually lead to Reg King leaving and the remainder of the band carrying on as heavy Psych act Mighty Baby. Solely comprised of their own material, disc 3 shows that the band never lost their knack for being able to get the best out of a good tune and it doesn’t take a huge leap of faith to see Love Is All as a great big Summer Of Love hit – had it been released at the time.
Shadows and Reflections (issued by Cherry Red imprint Grapefruit) is said to be the most comprehensive tribute to The Action thus far, with many of the original single mixes getting their debut on CD as part of this set and newly found multi-tracks and rehearsal tapes allowing for a whole disc’s worth of previously unheard mixes and performances. This deluxe set comes as a bookset and includes a 16,000 words of notes by David Wells in a 36-page booklet. It will be issue on 26 October 2018. On the same day, a new 12-track vinyl LP, The New Action!, will be issued.
The group was dropped by Parlaphone in 1967 but carried on recording an album full of demos intended to be released under the title Rolled Gold. Disc three contains the Rolled Gold recordings, recorded between mid-1967 and 1968, but not released until 1995, as well as the tracks that made up the EP Action Speaks Louder Than recorded in 1968, but unreleased until 1985. Disc four lives up to its subtitle Extra Action rounding up tracks from throughout the band’s entire lifespan, opening with their debut single released on the Pye label under the group’s original moniker, The Boys, showcasing their rhythm and blues roots, with acoustic guitars and Reg King’s lead and the band’s harmony vocals dominating the sound. The Action has never sounded so good with the songs mixed and remastered by Palao with the aid of Shel Talmy and Wally Sound.
