Sir John Edward Rowles KNZM OBE (born 26 March 1947) is a New Zealand singer. He was most popular in the late 1960s, 1970s and early 1980s, and he was best known in New Zealand for his song from 1970, "Cheryl Moana Marie", which he had written about his younger sister. Rowles was born in Whakatane, New Zealand, and is part Māori. His father, Eddie Hohapata Rowles, played for the 1938 Māori All Blacks. His mother was European. He was brought up in Kawerau, in the North Island of New Zealand.
Seeing John Rowles play an intimate Sunday afternoon showcase at the Auckland casino feels like a privilege. Here’s the Māori boy from Kawerau, who for a brief moment became one of the world’s biggest ballad singers, back home playing not a large concert hall but a bar so small you could reach out and shake his hand. M’lady’ reached N. in New Zealand in early 1969 while John returned home on a triumphal tour, which included a civic reception in Kawerau. The next single, ‘One Day’, failed to chart in either the UK or New Zealand, but hit in South America, Italy, Spain, Germany and Hong Kong.

The next single was "M'Lady"/"Say Goodbye" and again this did well in New Zealand, reaching the top of the charts. This was followed by "One Day"/"I Must Have Been Out Of My Mind" and "It Takes A Fool Like Me"/"When You Walk Away". John went on sell-out tours that included places like Italy, Germany and Spain. 1984 saw the release of "The Very Best Of John Rowles" and an album called "In The Portrait Of My Mind". In 1988 came "In My Wildest Dreams" and then in 1990, John went to Auckland to perform a one-off concert at the Aotea Centre.
