The Great Lars Gullin '55/'56, Vol. 1 Contents.

Lars Gullin is heard with three different groups in concert on this compilation album issued by Dragon. These well-recorded mid-’50s performances feature the mellow baritone saxophonist (who could easily be compared to Gerry Mulligan style-wise) playing his originals with the two different Swedish groups, though the real fireworks happen when he sits in with trumpeter Chet Baker’s short-lived quartet (so described because Baker’s promising young pianist Richard Twardzik died of a heroin overdose. only six days after their meeting with Gullin). The baritone saxophonist sits out one number (Bob. Lars Gullin – barytonsax (spår 4, 6, 7) Chet Baker – trumpet Dick Twardzik – piano Jimmy Bond – bas Peter Littman – trummor Caterina Valente – sång (spår 7). Lars Gullin Quartet (spår 8–11).

Yes this is a rare Chet Baker session (4 tracks only), but it is great for the legend of European Jazz, Lars Gullin on baritone sax. Improving upon the original LP in Dragon's Lars Gullin series by adding an additional four-song session, this CD features the legendary Swedish baritonist with four different groups from the 1955-1956 period, ranging from a quartet to an octet and featuring trumpeter Chet Baker on four numbers. Throughout, Gullin is heard in prime form, stretching out on his most famous original ("Danny's Dream"), featuring the cool-toned clarinet of Arne Domnerus on "Ma," and holding his own with Baker's quartet.

Baker took Twardzik on his 1955 European tour, which was recorded extensively in Holland, Germany and France, the last to be Twardzik’s final set. He died of a heroin overdose in his Paris hotel on October 21, 1955. According to Chambers: He (Twardzik) was expected at a recording session with Baker, and when he didn’t show, someone was sent to his hotel room. The Swedish EP is not listed in the Twardzik discography published on the Internet, nor is the 1982 12-inch LP The Great Lars Gullin ’55/’56 Vol. 1 with Chet Baker & Dick Twardzik, Dragon DRLP 36, Side A tracks 4 and 5, Cool Blues, and Brash; and Side B tracks 1 and 2, Lover Man, and I’ll Remember April. Growing up in the Boston area as I did, I saw Twardzik, bassist Jimmy Bond, and drummer Peter Littman play. Reply . LondonJazzCollector on December 1, 2013 at 19:19 said

Lars Gunnar Victor Gullin (4 May 1928 – 17 May 1976) was a Swedish jazz saxophonist. Lars Gullin was a child prodigy on the accordion. At age thirteen, he played clarinet in a military band and later learned the alto saxophone, but after moving to Stockholm in 1947 became a professional musician as a pianist. He planned on a classical career, studying privately with classical pianist Sven Brandel. Gullin toured several European countries with Chet Baker in October 1955, in a group which was marred by tragedy; it was Gullin who found the body of the group's pianist Dick Twardzik, victim of a heroin overdose, on 21 October, in a Paris hotel room. The remainder of Gullin’s career was blighted by his own narcotics problems, and sometimes he survived on artists’ grants from the Swedish government. He was restricted by illness for much of the later part of 1958.
