Roky Erickson - The Evil One mp3 album

Roky Erickson was very much a changed man when he re-emerged on the music scene in the late '70s after a deeply troubling stay in a mental institution following an arrest for drugs in 1969.

Flashback: Roky Erickson Serenades Demons and Zombies on ‘The Evil One’. Late singer-guitarist’s brilliant 1980 album paired triumphant rock with eerily vivid occult themes. What’s so impressive about the song, and about The Evil One as a whole, is how at home Erickson seems with his subject matter, how soulful and assured. Whether he’s addressing Lucifer himself, recalling how he walked with a zombie last night or proclaiming tonight to be the night of the vampire, he sounds as comfortable as his heroes Little Richard or the Stones did when they sang about undisguised lust. Somehow, these monsters were real to Erickson.

Their first, self-titled album was a classic in any era or genre. Building on the single’s success, its lysergic, frantic garage rock is utterly unmissable and if you don’t own it, simply put, you should. Two further albums, Easter Everywhere (which includes later Screamadelica cover Slip Inside This House) and Bull Of The Woods, beloved of the indie-pop kids of 1986-7 were less commercially succesful if no less crucial. Forming his new band The Aliens in 1979, Erickson released The Evil One as a kind of overlapping suite of songs with predeceser I Think Of Demons, produced and helmed by former Creedance man Stu Cook. Roky was by this time extremely unwell; he believed an alien inhabited his body and had developed an obsession with the mail.

There are many Roky Erickson albums, but The Evil One originally released by CBS Records in Europe in 1980 was the first of them and, many would say the best. This re-issue features 35 tracks including 20 on disc two from The Modern Humans Show August 20, Track Listings. The album is haunted by vampires, demons, and the devil but that's because Roky himself was haunted by them. I can't say enough about the absolute genius of this album. Also, do yourself a favor and get the documentary on Roky You're Gonna Miss Me When I'm Gone. It's fascinating with some amazing musical clips.
