Aretha in Paris’ is a full-on body blow. It’s a massive embrace, from the standpoint of friendship; it’s a passionate, hip-melding ride, from the standpoint of lovers; it’s a full-throated shout that quickens the heart’s pace. Her voice is a blend of Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday, with some of the classic girl group swagger of the mighty Shirelles’ front line vocal attack. Her breath control is insane

Enregistrement Public à l'Olympia 1961. Enregistrement Public à l'Olympia 1961 is Jacques Brel's first live album. Also known as A L'Olympia (Philips 6416 403), the album was reissued on 23 September 2003 under the title Enregistrement Public à l'Olympia 1961 as part of the 16-CD box set Boîte à Bonbons by Barclay (980 816-8). All tracks composed by Jacques Brel, except where noted. Les prénoms de Paris" (Brel, Gérard Jouannest). Les bourgeois" (Brel, Jean Corti).

Aretha Franklin sings it loud and proud, in front of a classy crowd at the Olympia Theater in Paris – a move that would have made Berry Gordy proud, but which is carried off here in a classic Atlantic mode throughout! Given the tight studio handling of Aretha during these early Atlantic years, the live setting is a nice surprise – and shows that the Jerry Wexler touch could still hold strong, and present a concert version of Franklin's new groove that was every bit as great as the studio on. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws. You might be interested. Soft & Beautiful (photo cover).

Doing right by Aretha meant a lot personally to us, because we had a relationship with her-not just me, too, Aretha had a relationship with the paper.
