It was released on December 15, 2014, by RCA Records, bringing an end to his 14-year hiatus that followed his 2000 album Voodoo. The album was produced and mostly written by D'Angelo, who collaborated with musicians such as percussionist Questlove, bassist Pino Palladino, guitarist Isaiah Sharkey, and horn player Roy Hargrove.
Michael Eugene Archer (born February 11, 1974), better known by his stage name D'Angelo (pronounced di-Angelo), is an American singer, songwriter, t and record producer. D'Angelo is associated with the neo soul movement, along with artists like Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill, Maxwell, and collaborator Angie Stone. Born in Richmond, Virginia, the son of a Pentecostal minister, he taught himself piano as a child.
Sam D'Angelo led the '80s indie rock band Sister Ray until its 1990 breakup, before returning years later in 2002 as a solo artist. Based in Youngstown, OH, D'Angelo founded Sister Ray in 1985 alongside his brother Joe. The garage punk band released a few records, including a single for Sub Pop, and ultimately broke up in 1990. During the '90s, D'Angelo earned a college degree and led a nine-to-five lifestyle. Around 2001, he decided to begin writing songs again
Black Messiah is a studio album by D'Angelo and the Vanguard, released on December 15, 2014 through RCA Records. The project serves as D'Angelo’s third studio LP, and his first since taking a near-fifteen year hiatus due to his sex symbol status eclipsing his credibility as a talented musician.
