Cat.Here you've got the Modern Jazz Quartet playing with an orchestra in 1973. If that description makes you think this is going to suck, that was my initial thought too. I was wrong. What's really cool is that there is a common theme, motif that plays throughout all the tracks, so it sounds like a movie soundtrack. And guess who is responsible for the cover art? Steve Lacywho made a stylistic leap in joining Taylors quartet in their embrace of free jazzis heard here also blowing a new sound through the horn.
The Modern Jazz Quartet was formed in 1952 by Milt Jackson (vibraphone), John Lewis (piano, musical director), Percy Heath (bass), and Kenny Clarke (drums). Connie Kay replaced Clarke in 1955. Various of the members had played together backing other artists such as Dizzy Gillespie and Ray Brown, and in Jackson's own Quartet.
