Smashing Pumpkins should have been in high spirits heading into the making of their second LP. But according to Billy Corgan, the lead-up to Siamese Dream was one of the darkest chapters in the band’s history. We were on tour, selling out everywhere we go, the singer told Rolling Stone in 1995 of the period following their 1991 debut, Gish. Everything went cool, fine, dandy. Suddenly, boom: Nirvana 1. A nervous breakdown and an intraband breakup set the stage for the album. Corgan had a nervous breakdown just before making Siamese Dream. If you’re a desperate person, an insecure person, and go to such great lengths as to have a rock band to satiate those insecurities, something is not right, he told RS in 1995.
Does the Smashing Pumpkins’ second album, Siamese Dream - released 25 years ago on July 27, 1993 - take the title of best alt-rock guitar album of the ‘90s? For those who love dreamy hooks and diary-like lyricism, the answer is often a resounding, "duh. There’s stiff competition for this vaunted crown, from Nirvana to Pavement to Soundgarden to My Bloody Valentine to whoever else you think deserves it, all of whom released classic six string-centric LPs during an era known for its classic six string-centric albums
Their debut album, Gish, established Smashing Pumpkins as a viable alternative rock band with arena rock potential, but Siamese Dream broke the gameplan wide open. From their earliest days, the Pumpkins had been a cauldron of heated emotions and demanding visions. And with producer Butch Vig ready to capture the big rock sound that many alternative groups were shying away from, Corgan and Vig went about layering the guitars until the wall couldn’t be penetrated
Pavement may have been wrong about Smashing Pumpkins, at least in 1994. But in all fairness to Stephen Malkmus, Billy Corgan started it. Cherub Rock, the leadoff track and first single from the band’s second album Siamese Dream, was Corgan’s own massive, dramatic and altogether glorious kiss-off to the narrow minded culture of indie rock, as he saw it anyhow. Stay cool and be somebody’s fool this year, he sings, barely containing his cynicism through his dreamy croon, landing his lethal blow with the equally biting couplet, because they know who is righteous what is bold/so I’m told
