Pablo preps Turntable Technology. Words /. Resident Advisor. Entitled Turntable Technology, the record takes from disparate genres such as jazz, soul, classical and hip-hop to create a lush downtempo journey, with plenty of spoken word samples peppered throughout. It's not a strictly sample-based affair, however, as Hunter plays a fair few instruments on Turntable Technology himself, including the Cuatro guitar, which is Puerto Rico's national instrument. The album comes as a double disc set, with the second CD containing instrumental versions of many of the first disc's vocal tracks on top of six additional cuts. Released by Soma Records. Having made a few dollars from contributing music to Grand Theft Auto as well as CSI NY hasn’t affected the ability of this Scotsman to craft a beat that junkies want to hear while not situated in front of a television. Releasing music since the ?90s Michael Hunter – here recording as Pablo – has been able to encompass the stylistic shifts of hip hop and electronic music over his recorded career. The title track of the album should probably summon images of Bowser and power-ups. In just over a minute’s time Hunter gives listeners music that’s not just well composed, but endearing and headnodic. Of course, this European isn’t all Mario Brothers and car chases. The Story of Sampling works in effective strings as well as enough empty space and pauses to convince any critic of his prowess.

Reviews about Pablo - Turntable Technology (1):
Pablo's turntable trickery finds itself in fine form on TURNTABLE TECHNOLOGY, from the altered voices and blues stomp on "Sing" to the sample-frenzy of "Turn the Page" (its instrumental version emphasizes the theramin and funky groove, the way that the instrumental version of "Sky is High" brings forth the jazz.) He pastiches his own rap together on "The Story of Sampling," which is quite the feat in itself, and the easy listening strings in the background make it that more appealing (the instrumental emphasizes the musicality of the piece, though the way the sound pauses altogether at some points is a bit jarring). That mood is continued into "Record Shop." In fact, he's almost better on his little interludes like "Music Maestro," "The Cuatro Track," and "Into the Deep Blue" than on his longer tracks, like the grimy "Goes to Pluto." But "Rooftop Chase," with its intricate instrumentation (dig that bass!) is able to keep up, and "High Jazz" delivers on its promise, with a snare-centric rhythm and a sinuous melody ("Reincarnation" will also jazz things up nicely). The tinkling mystery of "Act of Persuasion" gives way to a heavier, chugging beat, whereas "Journey's End" travels a more ambient route. An excellent selections of grooves.
