Ralph Sutton , Ruby Braff - R&R: Quartet mp3 album

The fourth volume of the Ralph Sutton Quartet with Ruby Braff is much like the earlier three, recorded at wife Sunnie Sutton's club Sunnie's Rendezvous during an extended stay in 1968. While the piano is still less than perfectly in tune, Sutton is like the past master Art Tatum at making the best of things. Unlike earlier volumes, this CD sticks more to familiar standards. Braff is a very lyrical player, as always, saying more with legato lines than other players can with a flurry of notes

Reuben "Ruby" Braff (March 16, 1927 – February 9, 2003) was an American jazz trumpeter and cornetist. Jack Teagarden was once asked about him on the Gary Moore TV show and described Ruby as "the Ivy League Louis Armstrong. Braff was born in Boston. He was renowned for working in an idiom ultimately derived from the playing of Louis Armstrong and Bix Beiderbecke.

Virtually all of the music played at this session is familiar stuff. But there's no lack of exuberance and freshness. For those who occasionally must be happily reminded just how great this music can be, this album is an absolute must. Personnel: Ruby Braff - Cornet; Ralph Sutton - Piano; Jack Lesberg - Bass; Gus Johnson - Drums. Title: R & R Year Released: 2002 Record Label: Chiaroscuro Records.
