Several Shades of Why. Sub Pop., 2011. On Dinosaur J. s self-titled 1985 debut, J Mascis sang, "I never try that much 'cause I'm scared of feeling. Over the last 26 years, Mascis has produced a number of guitar-rock touchstones, yet it's been tough to tell exactly how much effort and emotion has gone into his work.
Mascis has never been known as an especially lucid lyricist, and this album hardly challenges that assumption, but the tenor of this album speaks to a more sincere and mature emotional core than much of the writer's previous work, and as mushy as his vocals traditionally are, here he doesn't reach for effect, but simply speaks to his heart and mind. Several Shades of Why isn't an album that sounds grandiose, but it's a strong and thoughtful work that features plenty of fine songs performed by a gifted guitarist with an equally capable ensemble by his side.
J Mascis (b. 1965) is an American musician and songwriter, probably best-known as the singer, guitarist, and songwriter for Dinosaur J. though he has also occasionally worked as a producer and film composer. View full artist profile. Play all. Dinosaur Jr. 814,667 listeners. J Mascis and the Fog.
Album · 2011 · 10 Songs. Dinosaur J. s J Mascis doesn’t simply turn off the amps for this acoustic record, but actually crafts the songs to fit the acoustic medium. For Mascis, this is a major statement. During past acoustic excursions, he played his acoustic guitars like they were hooked up to Marshall stacks. But his gentler side takes over for these positively pleasant sing-alongs.

the album in various instrumental and vocal capacities (Kurt Vile and Broken Social Scene's Kevin Drew being just two). A lot of the anticipation hinged on what, exactly, the album would sound like; fans had come to expect a certain general sound out of Mascis from his work with Dinosaur J. but would this be the kind of solo debut which merely mines the same ground as the artists' well-known work, perhaps with minor formula tweeks, or would it be bold. Mascis has often been compared to Neil Young, both for his raucous style of guitar-work and for his nasal vocals, and in that sense it could be said that Several Shades of Why is comparable to Young's Harvest Moon or Comes a Time albums; a rocker stripping down his songwriting and re-contextualizing it in a largely acoustic, percussion-free.
