Oh how the circumstances change (ooooohhhhhh) I fly by interstate across a purple mountain range I find a place to come undone Zigzagging toward you now I sing out loud our boundless song.
Years ago, Conor Oberst was called the new Dylan. Yet Oberst's discography-from his solo albums to his Bright Eyes material to his many side projects-is already starting to eclipse the Bard's in sheer volume, and Oberst is only 34. This makes it hard to assert that Upside Down Mountain is the sound of a former prodigy maturing, but it is. While these songs are stuffed full of guest musicians, the tracks are some of Oberst's simplest; they're full of concise, cutting lines.
Upside-Down Mountain. Known for his prolific pen, Conor Oberst slowed down in the new millennium, enjoying his tours with the Monsters of Folk but generally staying away from albums of new songs; even Outer South, his last album with the Mystic Valley Band, was littered with contributions by his bandmates. This makes his 2014 album Upside-Down Mountain noteworthy - it's his first collection of original material since 2008's eponymous effort for Merge, and it's also the first record since to be billed to him alone.
Upside Down Mountain is a new Conor Oberst. I was always a big fan of his band, Bright Eyes, and his solo works but this album is above and beyond most of his previous stuff. He's no longer writing for the teen angst crowds; he's grown up and his lyrics show that best.

Which is one surprise, among many, in "You Are Your Mother's Child," from Oberst's artful and beautifully realized Upside Down Mountain. Here we have a tired, heartstring-tugging trope from the 1970s resurrected as something lucid and disarmingly poignant. Something that can sneak right inside the most cynical heart and melt the layers. Singing in the wavering, edge-of-emotion tone that is his trademark, Oberst follows the stages of a young life ("Halloween costume, lookin' real cute") with the fond, measured regard of the cool parent.
