Fun Lovin' Criminals are a band from New York City. Their musical style is eclectic, covering styles such as hip hop, rock, blues, jazz, R&B, punk, and funk. They are best known for their hit "Scooby Snacks", which features samples from films by Quentin Tarantino, and the song "Love Unlimited", which recalls Barry White's backing vocal group. Their songs often focus on life in New York City, as well as urban life in general.
To use a segment of another's musical recording as part of one's own recording. It spends the rest of its 54-minutes jumping between talking heads defining and arguing for or against sampling use, archival footage of concerts, both primary and contemporary, and highlighting some noteworthy examples. Using Jay-Z's vocals from the acapella release of The Black Album (2004), DJ Danger Mouse cut it over samples from The Beatles White Album. Black and white combined, of course, make gray. The film makes the point that Danger Mouse wasn't trying to get fame and success from it and that its cult status came from fans on the internet.

NotesA documentary on the History of Sampling
Copyright Criminals examines the creative and commercial value of musical sampling, tracing the rise of the Hip-Hop from the urban streets of New York to its current status as a multibillion-dollar industry.
For more than 30 years, innovative Hip-Hop performers and producers have been re-using portions of previously recorded music in new, otherwise original compositions.
When lawyers and record companies got involved, what was once referred as a "Borrowed Melody" became a "Copyright Infringment".
As artists find ever more inventive ways to insert old influences into new material, this documentary asks a critical question, on behalf of the an entire creative community: Can you own a sound?
