With that, Blood Bitch, her sixth album, deliberately enters two other great traditions: vampire movies and-as with all of Hval’s work-the timeless cross-hairs of art and pop. Trending Now. Ken Burns Rates Mockumentaries, Psychedelics, and Old Town Road. The text celebrates the interior intellectual life of its narrator, a failed experimental filmmaker, in the context of a peculiar love story-she’s become obsessed with a man named Dick and she writes letters to him. It began one night, when she believed she had conceptually fucked him (through conversation). She turns her fixed infatuation into an art project.
For Your Love is the first American album by English rock band the Yardbirds. Released in July 1965, it contains new studio recordings along with previously released singles. The album features some of the earliest recordings by guitarists Eric Clapton and his replacement Jeff Beck.
Jenny Hval's Blood Bitch is our album of the year for 2016. We catch up with Hval to talk about the record's meaning in the context of the year's outstanding tragedies and failures. No other record directly addresses art’s place in the world like Blood Bitch, and it might be the only album to provide a solution
HVAL: I’ve been obsessed with this album for a while, so it was mainly just choosing the song with death in the title. One of the reasons why it’s cool to have it there is if you do have a playlist for a funeral, if some of the songs are very long it’s going to be kind of confusing and weird. A lot of space to listen. I imagine that this song is more about wanting to say to the audience that a funeral is not just about the deceased, it’s also about the people present. HVAL: This is one of the most famous Norwegian artists from our childhood. Obviously, this is a very ’80s sounding, which might be very strange because you don’t know the words, but I’m not sure it’s really that interesting to translate. Whenever people say, But the lyrics are really good, and you translate them, it’s like, Uh, really?. It doesn’t necessarily read that well because it’s meant to be with the music.
The album is littered with '90s influences, paying tribute to Biggie on the Jeffrey Osborne-sampling 'Mo Money Mo Problems', while a love of TLC comes to the fore on 'Swing My Way'. With Kamaiyah’s own Big Money Gang thrown into the spotlight alongside Bay Area big-hitter YG, A Good Night in the Ghetto is a modern West Coast classic, one written by a 20-year-old with something to prove after her mother kicked her out of the house. Norway's Jenny Hval faces her fever dreams on Blood Bitch, where vampiric fantasies and diaristic reflections blur together like shadow puppets projected inside her skull. With production assistance from noise artist Lasse Marhaug, Hval weaves motorik trances, musique concrète infernos and blushing synth-pop, blending the earthly misery of Throbbing Gristle to the astral grace of Arthur Russell with untold authority.
Conceptual romance is on my mind I call it abstract romanticism Conceptual romance is you It's you and I It's you and I. This blood bitch's tale It goes a bit like this: I lose myself in the rituals of bad art, in failure I want to give up but I can tell My heartbreak is too sentimental for you. Conceptual romance is on my mind I call it abstract romanticism Conceptual romance is you It's you and I It's you and I. So I lose my gaze to keep you Creating a curve for the eyes A rejected body And losing it is constant, but such a lonel.
On the first song of her 2011 album Viscera, Jenny Hval waited a whole minute before singing: I arrived in town with an electric toothbrush pressed against my clitoris. This time around, she gets straight down to business: the first sound on her new LP Innocence Is Kinky is a conspiratorial voice announcing, That night, I watched people fucking on my computer. As a person you can’t go round being somebody you love, somebody you dig – if you saw yourself from the outside you’d probably go, ‘Oh God’ all the time. She also reminds us that songwriting can involve something more than beatific adoration of a subject.
