Is Sweet Home, Go about surpassing the gulf of time? Yes, but a different kind of gulf. Music is always light and heavy, but it should never just be a quick fix of energy or a mood enhancer. I'm always imagining, what if the powerful flow of music could stop time and shoot us us out of this cold abyss into the heavenly skies above, then drop us to our deaths. It led me to their album Sweet Home, Go!, which I soon realized was a strong effort with several styles blended into a massive, moody journey. After a few listens, I dug deeper in their discography, only to realize how volatile this Chinese group is. Playing a mix of post rock with ambient, jazz and noise influences, you get multiple detours and unexpected turns on each track.

Wang Wen 惘闻. Dalian, China. Founded in 1999 in Dalian, Wang Wen is considered as one of China’s hardest working indie bands. The band released 7 studio albums since 2002 and one split vinyl with Swedish instrumentalists P. OST. Wang Wen makes beautiful melancholic instrumental music and they are well known for their intense live shows.
Over the years, Wang Wen evolved from alternative rock wannabes to Mainland indie institutions. Standout discs like 2007’s RE: RE: RE: showcase the group’s unique take on post-rock, which incorporates traditional melodies and sounds. He giddily plugs upcoming discs from Dalian groups DOC, ERG and Park Which but seems abashed at the fact that younger acts like Hiperson and Stolen have cited Wang Wen as a model to follow. Young bands now are much more professional and developed musically so they don’t need much advice, he says. As long as they live in accordance with their ideas, then they will be good.
