Audio only, with an extraordinary beginning and a scary middle section, this is Peter Hammill's live and solo version of his song "Patient", from the unofficial live CD 'Stations of a Lonesome Trip'. Other than the track listing, the only information on the CD cover is that it was recorded 'live in Europe 1992'. This song was originally released on the 1983 solo album 'Patience', and a live version was released in 1985 on the album "The Margin" by Peter Hammill & The K Group, but this version is much more feisty than both of those

At times a chorus of vocals (provided by his two daughters) swells up, particularly on "Naming the Rose," with a sound reminiscent of a chamber chorus meeting some misbegotten singer. In a couple of places a violin and viola make musical appearances for additional drama. Atmosphere is very important to the music that Peter Hammill creates, and at times None of the Above is filled with it, but there are also points on this release when things become a bit too monotonous

Peter Hammill's daughters Holly and Beatrice Hammill sing backing soprano voices on two tracks. The instrumentation is dominated by guitars (more as a "colour-wash", as Hammill wrote in his newsletter), keyboards and some strings. The long recording time is due to Hammill's parallel work on a remastered 4-CD compilation of Van der Graaf Generator called The Box. Title. The title of the album is the English phrase "None of the above", meaning none of the other choices are appropriate  . The first seven tracks all have the same topic as "Naming the Rose": people coming to an end of a phase in their life, in very different circumstances. But the eighth song ("Astart") says: every end can be a new start.
