Three Pink Floyd albums celebrate anniversaries this year. The tracks, despite being selected from a twenty-hour-long set of demos recorded during The Division Bell sessions, flow one after the other creating an unexpected solid compilation of ambient sounds, experimental works and unmistakable quotations from almost every previous release.
Shine On is a 1992 nine-CD box set by Pink Floyd which was released through EMI Records in the United Kingdom and Columbia Records in the United States to coincide with Pink Floyd's 25th anniversary as a recording and touring band. All CDs were digitally remastered. Included with the box set was a hardcover book chronicling the career of Pink Floyd from its inception to the late 1980s and an envelope of postcards depicting artwork from the included seven albums and the cover of the set itself.
Only two tracks from Household Objects, Pink Floyd’s aborted Dark Side follow-up, were ever completed. 150. Goodbye Cruel World, The Wall (1979). This solid, if relatively staid, table-setter is kind of like the start of Shine on You Crazy Diamond updated (downgraded?) for the ’80s. There’s the familiar liquid silver droplets of Gilmour’s guitar and an enchanting misty ambience, but also synths on synths on synths on synths. But with Gilmour, Wright and Mason present, it counts as an overlooked – but not particularly amazing – Floyd track.
Similar processes were used on their album Atom Heart Mother (1970), specifically the track Alan’s Psychedelic Breakfast, which included recordings of Pink Floyd roadie Alan Styles frying bacon and eggs, and hypnotic sounds of a tap dripping. The Household Objects recording sessions took place at varying times between 1971 and 1974, says Rolling Stone, and consisted of Pink Floyd playing songs on hand mixers, light bulbs, wood saws, hammers, brooms and other home appliances. Recording in this manner was excruciating.
