Rhapsody in Blue is a 1924 musical composition by the American composer George Gershwin for solo piano and jazz band, which combines elements of classical music with jazz-influenced effects. The composition was commissioned by the bandleader Paul Whiteman. It was orchestrated by Ferde Grofé several times, including the original 1924 scoring, the 1926 "theater orchestra" setting, and the 1942 symphony orchestra scoring, though completed earlier

COMPOSED/WORLD PREMIERES: Gershwin composed Rhapsody in Blue from January 7 through February 3, 1924, with Ferde Grofé creating the work’s original scoring for solo piano with jazz band. The work was premiered February 12, 1924, at New York’s Aeolian Hall, with Paul Whiteman leading his orchestra and the composer as piano soloist. In 1926, Grofé followed up with the version for solo piano and full symphony orchestra. SFS PERFORMANCES: FIRST-The 1926 revision for piano and orchestra, the version played at these performances, was first played at the SFS in December 1931.

In 1975, Columbia Records released an album featuring Gershwin's piano rolls of Rhapsody In Blue, accompanied by the Columbia Jazz Band playing the original jazz band accompaniment, conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas. The B-side of the Columbia Masterworks release features Tilson Thomas leading the New York Philharmonic in An American In Paris.

To hear a stripped down, jazz band version of Rhapsody with the piano being manned by George Gershwin (via the original piano roll that he cut) takes my breath every time that I hear it. The overtures of the Gershwin Broadway productions are magnificent and will thrill both fans of the maestro as well as classic Broadway buffs. This one uses the 1925 piano roll made by Gershwin himself. Check out the running time. 13:43 compared to Bernstein's apathetic 16:20. Tilson Thomas drives his orchestra to keep up with his soloist. This isn't the Rhapsody you've heard all these years, this is the version that was meant to be heard. The truth is there aren't many contemporary pianists that can keep up with Gershwin's pall mall pacing; they're just not from the 20's Jazz Era (most are simply wonderful concert pianists).
