Perhaps the most eccentric solo debut ever by a famous band member, this was released during Nesmith's Monkees tenure, and while most of the compositions were cut by The Monkees at some point, here they're presented in instrumental versions with massive orchestral/big-band arrangements. The thrillingly leftfield results are somewhere between The Beach Boys' Smile and the . instrumental pop of Herb Alpert

Wichita Train Whistle Sings. As a lifelong Monkees and Michael Nesmith fan, I was always curious about THE WICHITA TRAIN WHISTLE SINGS, the vanity project that Nes recorded in November 1967 with a full orchestra of . s top session musicians, conducted by the late Shorty Rogers. While the album is actually interesting and entertaining, (much like Paul McCartney's 1977 Thrillington album), the sound quality is pathetic. Dot Records, the label that released the original WICHITA TRAIN WHISTLE SINGS album, is now owned by Universal Music Group; if UMG should somehow find the masters for this album in their vaults, it would make a terrific reissue for their Hip-O or Hip-O Select imprints, with Nesmith's permission, of course.
