The fourth volume of Elvis' Gold Records was the first of his hits compilations to be issued at a point when Elvis Presley wasn't considered a very important rock & roll star anymore (a few months later, he would embark on his network television "comeback"). Indeed, it appeared at a point when it seemed, as Neal Umphred pointed out, "Elvis' gold was drained up and he was reduced to filling up the fourth volume with B-sides. So at the time, the album's arrival, and even its title, might have seemed like a joke to a lot of observers. That having been said, there is some superb music on Gold Records, Vol. 4, including "What'd I Say," "Witchcraft," and "A Mess of Blues," even if not a lot of it seemed near the cutting edge of music circa 1968.

Elvis' Gold Records Volume 5 is the final album in the Golden/Gold Records series by Elvis Presley (which began in 1958), issued posthumously on RCA Records in stereo, AFL1 4941, in March 1984. It is a compilation of hit singles released between 1968 and 1977. It is the only one of the series to miss the Billboard album chart, "bubbling under" at for two weeks. However, it was certified Gold on 7/15/1999 by the RIAA.

Whether at the behest of Colonel Tom Parker, or RCA, the philosophy of not including tracks that already featured on existing albums weakened what could have been a more powerful and hit-laden compilation
