The Mozart Sinfonia Concertante for violin, viola, and orchestra in E flat, K. 364, is a challenging work for interpreters, with one of those spacious Mozart first movements that lack real melodies, instead building up large structures through an evolving balance among a group of simple musical elements. A common approach is to try to give it a kind of tension, beginning with the long held note by the solo violin at the beginning of the first solo section, coming in several bars before the start of the actual solos; the rest of the long movement then releases the tension.
