Gavin Bryars - The Marvellous Aphorisms Of Gavin Bryars - The Early Years mp3 album

While Gavin Bryars is best known for his long-form compositions ("The Sinking of the Titanic, Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet), he also played a significant role in the early development of British free improv, playing bass in the trio Joseph Holbrooke with Derek Bailey and Tony Oxley. He left the trio, which was far from any level of fame, to focus on composing and on this CD the New York label Mode presents four of those early pieces in updated interpretations.

Bryars early works were highly loose in terms of form, often consisting of no more than verbal instructions to aid their realization or consisting of a computer printout of dots and dashes. Inspired by his participation in the Scratch Orchestra and Portsmouth Sinfonia and the influence of arch-English avant-gardist Cornelius Cardew, Bryars washed his hands of such music in 1972 and did not resume composition until 1975. The CD opens with Seth Josel's realization of Bryars' The Squirrel of the Ricketty-Racketty Bridge, played on electric guitars laid flat on their backs, written for guitarist Derek Bailey and first recorded by him in 1971. Here guitarist Seth Josel plays the piece as prescribed and comes up with a result rather unlike Bailey's.

Gavin Bryars' early music from the years 1969-71. At that time, Bryars became associated with Michael Nyman, John Tilbury and Brian Eno, marrying ideas from Cage, Fluxus, free improvisation and experimentalism. Some of works recorded here appeared on Eno's avant-garde Obscure label in the mid-1970s. The Squirrel and The Ricketty Racketty Bridge was written for Derek Bailey. Bryars, Gavin (. 943).

The Sinking of the Titanic is a work by British minimalist composer Gavin Bryars. Inspired by the story that the band on the RMS Titanic continued to perform as the ship sank in 1912, it recreates how the music performed by the band would reverberate through the water some time after they ceased performing. Composed between 1969 and 1972, the work is now considered one of the classics of British experimental music.
