Talat Mahmood was born in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, to Manzoor Mahmood. Talat showed his musical leanings from a very young age and would enjoy sitting through all-night music soirees listening patiently to some of the biggest names in classical Indian music then. Coming from a conservative Muslim background, singing was not encouraged. Talat had to choose between working in films and staying at home. Despite his parental objection he opted for the former, though his family accepted the fact only about a decade later when he gained respect in the industry.

Talat Mahmood was one of the most respected voices in Bollywood for years. Born into a prominent Lucknow family, Mahmood came to prominence as a ghazal singer, thanks in part to the huge 1944 hit "Tasveer Teri Dil Mera Behela Na Sakegi. He began singing and acting a bit in Calcutta's film industry and made a successful move to Bombay in 1949. His good looks and polished manners only helped his reputation as an adept, smooth artist who could both sing and act. Known as the King of Ghazal, Mahmood passed away in 1998.

Talat Mahmood is the first name in ghazal singing, and also its brightest star. He was born in February 1924 in Lucknow into a family that did not encourage his interest in singing. Within a year, the music label HMV signed Mahmood for a disc recording

Talat Mahmood was one of the greatest male Indian non-classical and semi-classical singers  . He helped spread it to the masses, especially the Urdu-speaking community in India and abroad. His voice is also considered among the most soulful male voices ever heard in the Indian sub-continent. He recorded more than 800 songs and ghazals and acted in about 16 films. Talat received Padma Bhushan in 1992, in recognition of his contributions in the spheres of cinematic and ghazal music.
