Unlike most Blues singers of the time, Robert’s dextrous style meant didn’t use a ‘second’ guitar player when he made his recording debut for Victor Records in September 1928 with ‘Rolling Stone, Parts 1&2’, and it seems the Victor field-recording unit called him in every time they swung through Memphis over the next few years. Piedmont Records issued his new album ‘Memphis Gospel Singer’ in 1964, and he appeared at the Newport Folk Festival later that year, with ‘Prodigal Son’ and two other tracks featuring on the resulting live albums. Blues and gospel singer and guitarist, born January 16, 1896, in Hernando, Mississippi, died May 26, 1987 in Memphis. Wilkins moved to Memphis in 1915, and in the 1920s and 1930s played with such luminaries as Furry Lewis, Memphis Minnie, and Son House. He recorded blues for the Victor, Brunswick and Vocalion labels 1928-1935, but in the late 1930s joined the Church of God in Christ, where he became an ordained minister in 1950, and only played gospel music. He recorded a full LP of gospel songs in 1964. Variações: Visualizando tudo Robert Wilkins

Robert Timothy Wilkins was an American country blues guitarist and vocalist, of African American and Cherokee descent. His distinction was his versatility. He could play ragtime, blues, minstrel songs, and gospel with equal facility. From 1928 to 1936 he recorded for Victor and Brunswick Records, alone or with a single accompanist, like Sleepy John Estes, and unlike Gus Cannon of Cannon's Jug Stompers. In 1936 he quit the blues after witnessing a murder where he played, and joined the church. In 1950 he was ordained.
