It was released on RCA Victor, catalog number LPM-1254, in March 1956. June 10, Elvis managed to squeeze in a quick Nashville recording session, his last session until the spring of 1960 after his discharge from active duty. And the results, probably his most overall consistently high quality. RCA had continued to push for more sessions before Elvis shipped out to Germany in September, and the Colonel reluctantly agreed to both a recording session and a photo session during this two week furlough. Although they have common recording origins, two of the three singles, "It's Now or Never" and "Are You Lonesome Tonight," were very quirky by the standards of Elvis songs at the time - the former inspired by Elvis's admiration for Tony Martin's 1949 hit "There's No Tomorrow," while the latter was recorded at the request of Col. Parker as a favor to his wife.

Heartbreak Hotel" was the first Elvis Presley single to be released by RCA Records. Columbia and Atlantic expressed interest in the unusual new singer, but the Colonel had several contacts at RCA Victor, making a deal with this company preferable. Sholes was aware that the executives at RCA were closely watching their unusual new artist, who didn't fit into any of the company's existing categories of music. RCA re-released Elvis' Sun singles in December 1955; the reissue of "Mystery Train" did not sell well. Then the company arranged for Elvis to begin recording new material in Nashville the next month. Chet Atkins, RCA's head man in Nashville, organized the sessions, which started on January 10, 1956.

Elvis Presley never called it the Jungle Room. For him, his breathtakingly garish tiki-tinged lair – sui generis in the realm of ostentatious kitsch – was merely the den. Constructed in 1965 as an addition to Graceland, Presley’s already-fabled Memphis headquarters, the room was the nerve center of his home life. Presley’s status as an RCA recording star ensured that the company provided him with an endless stream of complimentary television sets. An RCA mobile studio truck was dispatched from Nashville, but it broke down just outside of Memphis and had to be towed through the gates of Graceland. Not the most auspicious start to the project. The furniture was cleared, the burbling waterfall switched off, and blankets hung as sound baffles.
