Béla Bartók / Ramor Quartet - String Quartets (Complete) #1-6 mp3 album

Bartok: String Quartets Nos. 1 - 6. Imported ed. Import. Bartok's cyle of six string quartets is universally considered to be one of the finest of the Twentieth Century. My reference recording remains the Takacs Quartet, recorded for London Records in 1996, but this Alban Berg Quartett cycle recorded from 1983 to 1986 is a fine alternative in a different style.

The String Quartet No. 6, Sz. 114, BB 119, was the final string quartet that Béla Bartók wrote before his death. It was begun in August 1939 in Saanen, Switzerland, where Bartók was a guest of his patron, the conductor Paul Sacher. Shortly after he completed the Divertimento for String Orchestra on the 17th, he started on a commission for his friend, the violinist Zoltán Székely.

String Quartet No. 1, Op. 7 Sz40: II. poco a poco Accelerando All'Allegretto. 3. String Quartet No. 7 Sz40: III. Introduzione - Allegro - Allegro Vivace. 6 Sz114: III. Mesto - Burletta - Moderato. 23. 6 Sz114: IV. Mesto.

The six string quartets of Béla Bartók mark a high point in the genre, and even though their myriad technical demands, rhythmic complexity, and bracing dissonances are no longer obstacles to frequent performance, they still present a major challenge for any string quartet. The Heath Quartet has been performing since 2002, and it has considerable experience with repertoire ranging from Beethoven to contemporary music, though this 2017 set on Harmonia Mundi shows that even after 15 years of music-making, these musicians can still be in awe of Bartók's achievement.

Reviews about Béla Bartók / Ramor Quartet - String Quartets (Complete) #1-6 (1):
blac wolf
This review is mostly based on Quartets #3 and #4, two masterpieces that make it easier to separate the men from the boys so to speak. The Ramors take their time (in #3 they are a full minute slower than the Tokyos, my reference for this quartet). Still, they add all the drama one may want, and then some, with their phrasing and their dynamics. Particularly in #4 at times their performance is startlingly different from any other I have heard (probably 20 between live and recorded). One may not like all the liberties they take, but undoubtedly this is a breath of fresh air from 1960, in vivid and 3D mono sound.
