Steve Albini is a musician and audio engineer whose many recording projects have exerted an important influence on independent music. Most of his projects from 1997 onwards were recorded at the Electrical Audio studios in Chicago. Albini has fronted the bands Big Black, Rapeman and Shellac on guitar and vocals. He also played bass for the touring incarnation of Pete Conway's solo project Flour whose records he also engineered.

Not only did he heed McCaughan’s wishes to put the energy first against convention, daringly pushing the fuzz above the words; he engineered an album that defined first a transition, and then a genre. In 1991, No Pocky for Kitty forecasted a world without grunge while grunge was reaching its apex. Infamously cantankerous studio rat/national treasure Steve Albini doesn't like to be called a record producer. He prefers the term "recording engineer. That album recalled any number of past Albini-recorded efforts. And so does Ugly, the forthcoming Screaming Females album, which Albini also recorded and which also kicks all kinds of ass. Given that Albini is having a banner year so far, we thought it’d be fun to honor some of the other records that Albini recorded.
But his forthcoming Steve Albini-produced album Attack on Memory, out January 24 via Carpark, is such a drastic rebirth that the 20-year-old Clevelander actually considered changing the name of the band for the occasion. More abrasive and emotionally candid than anything he's released, the record is a full-band effort that evokes early emo a la Sunny Day Real Estate as well as Baldi faves the Wipers.
