Album Draws a Circle. A Horse With No Name Lyrics. On the first part of the journey I was looking at all the life There were plants and birds and rocks and things There were sand and hills and rain The first thing I met was a fly with no buzz And a sky with no clouds The heat was hot and the ground was dry But the air was full of sound. You see I've been through the desert on a horse with no name It felt good to be out of the rain In the desert you can't remember your name 'Coz there ain't no one to a give you no paine

A Horse With No Name is a song about finding an existential epiphany after a trip through the desert. When he wrote the song, the 19-year-old America frontman Dewey Bunnell had to rely on vague memories and ideas of what the desert was even like. When he was a kid, Bunnell had lived on a California Air Force base, where his father had been stationed. He’d loved riding through the New Mexico and Arizona deserts with his father and his brother. But by the time he wrote the song, Bunnell had been living outside London for years. The desert was an idea, a pure abstraction. America’s self-titled debut album came out in the UK in 1970. It did OK. At first, A Horse With No Name wasn’t on it. But after the album came out, the band recorded A Horse With No Name, which they’d started out calling Desert Song, while fucking around at a friend’s home studio.

In a strange twist, "A Horse With No Name" replaced Young's "Heart of Gold" at in the US. Dewey Bunnell explained that he was well aware that he sounded like Neil Young on this song, but claimed he wasn't trying to imitate the singer. He told Rolling Stone in 1973: "I try to use a different voice so that I won't be branded as a rip-off. The San Francisco band The Loud Family named their first album Plants and Birds and Rocks and Things after a line in this song. This song found a new audience when it was used in the video game Grand Theft Auto. The band had some reservations about letting the song be used in the violent game, but Gerry Beckley's son Joe helped convince them to do so. As recorded by America (From the 1971 Album AMERICA).
