Caetano Veloso is the debut solo album by the artist of the same name, released in Brazil in 1968. He had released Domingo the year before in collaboration with Gal Costa.

Many of the pieces are so creative yet maintain elements of their origin so you see the exploration and stretching but always remaining true to the Brazilian roots. It's great to just listen to and relax to but each piece also arouses curiosity and pleasure through its originality.

Though the title is a reference to Veloso and Gil’s storied past as the bad boys of ’60s Brazilian rock, this 1994 release is more electronic than psychedelic-though no less listenable. Richly textured, complex, and funky, Tropicália 2 draws on Brazil’s wealth of rhythmic and songwriting traditions, including axé ("Nossa Gente ) and samba ("Cinema Novo ). It also indulges Veloso and Gil’s more experimental side with the sound collage Rap Popcreto and even a Jimi Hendrix cover ( Wait Until Tomorrow ) reworked with insistent Brazilian percussion.

Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil hold very important roles in developing and keeping Brazilian popular music vibrant and alive around the world. Over 50 years, they have both developed extremely successful careers as singers, composers, writers, and guitarists. Their importance to the culture of their country goes back to the 1960s, when they together created the Tropicália movement, which combined pop culture with traditional local music. Deeply critical of local politics and morality, Tropicália was eventually repressed by the authoritarian regime. He has won two Grammys and 10 Latin Grammy Awards, among other awards.

The album opens with "Haiti," a dry percussive electronic pattern over which Caetano and Gil speak verses dealing with racism; "Cinema Novo" is a beautiful samba, whose lyrics "explain" and greet the Brazilian cinema movement which gained the world. Nossa Gente" brings the percussive sounds of axé music together with funk brass attacks. The album, in philosophical terms, expresses fragile concepts.
