1990 live album by John McLaughlin Trio. Live at the Royal Festival Hall. Live album by. John McLaughlin Trio. It was recorded at the Royal Festival Hall in London on November 27, 1989, and was released on the JMT label in 1990 McLaughlin makes extensive use on this recording of the Photon guitar synthesiser, a setup whereby transducers mounted on an acoustic guitar are used to control a synthesiser bank via MIDI. This enables McLaughlin to invoke a range of sounds and effects normally the preserve of keyboard players, resulting in a greater variety of moods and textures than might be assumed from the line-up.

On Live at the Royal Festival Hall McLaughlin used a unique guitar synth that enabled him to effectively "loop" guitar parts and play over them live. The synth also featured a pedal that provided sustain. McLaughlin overdubbed parts to create lush soundscapes, aided by Gurtu's unique percussive sounds. He used this approach to great effect in the track Florianapolis, among others. In the early 1990s he toured with his trio on the Qué Alegría album. By this time, Eckhardt had left, with McLaughlin and Gurtu joined by bass player Dominique Di Piazza. In 1996, John McLaughlin, Paco de Lucia and Al Di Meola (known collectively as "The Guitar Trio") reunited for a world tour and recorded an album of the same name. They had previously released a studio album entitled Passion, Grace & Fire back in 1983. Meanwhile, in the same year of 1996 McLaughlin recorded The Promise.

It was reissued by Douglas/Casablanca, Elektra/Musician, and in 1987 by Rykodisc on CD, the music is strongly influenced by music of India, and was dedicated to McLaughlins spiritual leader, Indian guru Sri Chinmoy.
