Old Mother Riley in Society is a low budget 1940 black and white British comedy film, directed by John Baxter, and starring Arthur Lucan and Kitty McShane. It is the fifth in the long running Old Mother Riley series, and features the screen debut of Jimmy Clitheroe as the boot boy in a high society household. Old Mother Riley does the laundry for the dancers in the pantomime "Aladdin", where her daughter Kitty works as a chorus girl.

Here is a clip from Old Mother Riley Meets the Vampire. Fans of British comedy should note the two women in the background. One is Hattie Jacques who would later appear in Hancock's Half Hour in the 1950s, in many Carry On films in the 1960s, and with Eric Sykes. Arthur Lucan was truly a very clever and talented man, who created such a believable character, so much so, many thought he really was 'Old Mother Riley'. There is only two others that deserve a mention alongside Arthur Lucan and that is George Logan and Patrick Fyffe, who played eccentric spinsters, pianist Hinge and soprano Bracket, like Lucan, Logan and Fyffe created such believable characters and many thought Hinge and Bracket were real.

While certainly not the best in the series there are still a reasonable amount of genuine chuckles to be had and the film is very watchable. The version I have is not of the best quality and this always has to be taken into consideration when watching films of this ilk; sometimes they are far better than the actual film quality allows. Here we have Kitty getting sacked because of her mother (again!!) and ending up working at an illegal gambling joint because of her ne'er-do-well boyfriend, Bill.
