30 years ago today on July 13, 1985, two massive pop concerts changed the world. Bob Geldof had assembled the biggest talents in music for huge gigs at London's Wembley Stadium and Philadelphia's JFK Stadium, all with the aim to end poverty in Ethiopia. We take a look back at our 10 most favourite performances from the day that rocked the planet. 10. Hall & Oates: 'Out Of Touch' By 1985, Hall & Oates were bigger than Daryl Hall's hair (eg absolutely massive), and 15 years into their career at the time, returning to Philadelphia for the US Live Aid show was a homecoming. Even six years later in 1991, the audience were crazy about the duet when an official release hit N. in both the UK and US. 3. This performance was five years later, when Queen had gone on to become one of the biggest bands in the world. Even with all the money and fame they had accumulated at this point, they were still playing like they had something to prove. Under Pressure @ Budapest, 1986. Hungarian Rhapsody: Queen Live in Budapest’ is a concert film of Queen’s performance in Budapest on 27 July 1986. It was part of the final tour with original lead singer Freddie Mercury. With 50Weapons finished and Modeselektor fresh off a successful comeback album, Bronsert and Szary turn the spotlight back on Monkeytown with a tenth-anniversary collection. The label was once well-known for its Modeselektion compilations, whose tracks came from all over the electronic music map and made for vibrant, enriching listens. The focus of 10 Years Of Monkeytown Records is narrower, only featuring artists who have already released on the label. There's a lot of music here, but the mood is homogenous-most tracks are vaguely epic, highly melodic and melodramatic
How great is a band if others aren’t inspired by them? How great are they if they won’t tour, or only tour? In calculating this Treble countdown of the 30 best bands of the last 30 years we hope to continue an informed, important discussion of the music we all love, or at least spark one in the void. From the early Red Album and Blue Record to the stirring double-album Yellow and Green in 2012 and the most recent Purple, each Baroness effort somehow manages to rip the most complex emotions out of the chest of a metalhead like myself while I throw my fist in the air and bang my head. The past 30 years would have sounded very different were it not for the Pixies. Radiohead, Nirvana, PJ Harvey, Weezer, and countless other artists owe a debt to the legendary Boston band.
The 30 km Zone of Alienation was established soon after the disaster. It is an officially designated exclusion area around the site of the damaged nuclear reactor. Photographer André Joosse visited the Zone several times to document the abandoned villages, the city of Pripyat and the Nuclear Power Plant site.
