While nothing on this best-of collection quite matches the exquisiteness of Grant's solo work, you can still hear him testing the waters and laying the groundwork for what was to come. 60. There’s not much on here that comes close in quality to either of Grant’s solo albums-like a fine wine, he’s become better and better as he’s aged.

The Czars' reflective, sometimes jazz-tinged alternative pop/rock is a lot like a day that is overcast without being flat-out rainy; some rays of sunlight manage to break through the clouds, but the clouds still dominate the sky. And the Czars' work isn't growing any less melancholy on Goodbye, the Denver band's third full-length album.
The best word to describe the Czars is "elegant. It's the only word you could apply to all of the Denver quintet's music, from their loudest, fastest moment to their iciest piano passage. They bring their stately approach to a sound that migrates freely through cabaret, prog, country, folk, jazz, chamber music, and arena rock, often with a subtle electronic edge. The crux of that sound is the voice of pianist John Grant, a powerful, rangy instrument he's not shy about wielding in all its booming glory . Though it has its moments of excess (really, that "Trash" solo is a bit overboard), Goodbye is a luxurious album of subtle, exactingly crafted pop that's easy to come back to.
The Last Czars ends up being poisoned by what is meant to be its main advantage – the format. The show attempts to combine the tale of Nicholas’ reign, where he, his family, Rasputin, and all other important historical figures are portrayed by actors, with a talking-heads style, where a bunch of Western historians, led by Simon Sebag Montefiore author of The Romanovs 1613–1918), provide the audience with a bigger picture of what was happening in Russia. Important figures are oversimplified and cartoonish: ‘a good Romanov democratic adviser’, ‘a bad Romanov autocrat adviser’, ‘a ruthless revolutionary’. If there is one good thing about The Last Czars, it is the attitude the authors take toward its heroes: they portray Nicholas II as a well-intentioned, yet weak man, tragically unfit to rule the country.
