The League of Gentlemen was an instrumental group organized by Robert Fripp in 1980 featuring, in addition to his guitar, Barry Andrews on organ, Sara Lee on bass, and Jonny Toobad on drums, replaced by Kevin Wilkinson. This is their first album. It includes spoken word excerpts by Fripp 's spiritual advisor, . Bennett, and remarks about the music business by various unidentified people, sometimes heard over the music. That music is uptempo rock for the most part, dominated by Fripp 's often jarring guitar parts, although some calmer pieces recall his ambient efforts.
The album sleevenotes state that 'The League of Gentlemen' played a total of 77 gigs during 1980 and includes a full list of all these gigs starting at Moles, Bath on 10 April 1980 and finishing at the School of Economics, London on 29 November 1980. The tour was split into three discernible parts; Part 1: 10 April to 1 June – UK and Europe. Part 2: 14 June to 22 July – North America. Part 3: 10 September to 29 November – UK. Drummer Jonny Toobad left the band during Part 3 of the tour in Manchester on 22 November and was replaced for the remaining dates by Kevin Wilkinson.

The League of Gentlemen (band). The League of Gentlemen were a band active during March–December 1980 that featured guitarist Robert Fripp of King Crimson fame. Other members included bass guitarist Sara Lee (who later joined Gang of Four, the B-52's, and Indigo Girls), keyboardist Barry Andrews (formerly of XTC; later of Shriekback) and percussionist Johnny Toobad, replaced late in the band's tenure by Kevin Wilkinson (later of China Crisis and Squeeze).
Even if they were, the mixes are not the same here; the original album hard-panned the guitar and keyboards, where GSTK finds both more centered. This album is a combination of two albums, done in different times and different styles. League of Gentlemen finds Bob Fripp heading a lean mean dance band, with some flashy geetar music. It is a great side-trip on a career that has placed him in the role of pretentious guitar god (not without some merit). I like the stripped down no-nonsense Mr. Fripp here - it shows what he can really do.
When The League Of Gentlemen played their final show at the London School Of Economics on November 29, Andrews sensed the band had run its course. I think I was feeling more like part of some kind of Gurdjieffian social experiment gone wrong than was comfortable. And kinda patronised, if I’m honest. Fripp noted: The album presents two distinct sides of the band’s personality, which has caused at least as much confusion for the group as it has the public and the industry. If the music of Discipline had fallen easily into place, and Beat had been fraught with tension, the material making up King Crimson’s third and final album of the 1980s proved to be rather more elusive and difficult to nail down than anyone in the group could have imagined, taking several aborted attempts during 1983.
