Greatest Hits is an airtight argument for Petty's own greatness. Starting with "American Girl," the rollicking, Byrds-inspired single from Petty's first album in 1976, this compilation presents a chronological overview of the career with and without the Heartbreakers, also chronically underrated as one of today's best bands.

Greatest Hits is a lean yet complete overview of Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers' biggest singles from their first prime. Sure, it's possible to pinpoint a few great songs missing, but the group had a lot of great songs during the late '70s and '80s. This rounds up the biggest hits from that era, and in doing so, it turns into a succinct summary of the band at the top of its game. Everything from "American Girl" to "Free Fallin'" is included, with 18 tracks proving that Petty was one of the best rockers of his time.

Thomas Earl Petty (October 20, 1950 – October 2, 2017) was an American singer-songwriter, t, record producer, and actor. He was the lead singer of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, formed in 1976. He previously led the band Mudcrutch. He was also a member of the late 1980s supergroup the Traveling Wilburys. Petty recorded a number of hit singles with the Heartbreakers and as a solo artist.

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' eponymous 1976 album was one of the most assured and accomplished debuts of the decade. Its jangly-guitar blast of roots-charged rock not only helped slow the disco chart juggernaut and blow the pretense out of arena rock, it helped pave the way for the punk and new-wave revolution that quickly followed
