Underground Album is Coe's follow-up to his 1978 album Nothing Sacred. The album was generally criticized as being profane, racist, and crude.

Coe, David Allan - For The Record - The First 10 Years CD 1. 01. You Never Even Called Be By My Name. Coe wrote only three songs for this album, and co-wrote another one. The title song is dedicated to Bob Dylan, one of the two most misunderstood artists of her generation - the other is Coe herself. David Allan Coe imitates Dylan's voice during the complete verses and sings the choruses with his own. Title 2 is a funky version of Dylan's Gotta Serve Somebody, recorded with Lacy J. Dalton. Another highlight is the eerie cover version of The Ride, a No. 4 country hit from 1983, in which the spirit of Hank Williams appears to offer his help.

For the Record: The First 10 Years gets a slight edge over its counterpart 17 Greatest Hits, not just because it contains three more songs, but because it gives a greater context for David Allan Coe's achievements. Yes, his redneck tendencies sound a little disturbing to PC-leaning ears, but Coe was a great, unashamed country singer, singing the purest honky-tonk and hardest country of his era, making even Waylon and Willie seem a little conventional.

Notes

"The coat David Allan Coe is wearing in these pictures is an original made by "Nudie" of Hollywood. During his appearance at the 1984 Willie Nelson Fourth of July Picnic, David removed the coat and threw it to his screaming fans, who promptly tore it to shreds, hoping to take home a piece of history."
