Sugar Blue (born James Joshua "Jimmie" Whiting, December 16, 1949, Harlem, New York City) is an American blues harmonica player. it's the sound of a musician who transcends the supposed limitations of his instrument.
How ironic that after years fronting the hugely influential but desperately overlooked Hüsker Dü, Bob Mould's first project with new band Sugar, 1992's Copper Blue, would become the most commercially successful project of his career. Of course, it was released just as the seeds sown by his former band were bearing bountiful fruits in the post-Nirvana alternative nation, which provided ample explanation for its phenomenal success. But Sugar were well deserving of their success, regardless of time and place.
Ultimately, Copper Blue is an album that not only sounds as good now as it did twenty years ago, but also one that’ll still blow cobwebs away two decades hence. You released two solo albums after the demise of Hüsker Dü in the shape of Workbook and Black Sheets Of Rain. What made you decide to return to a band format and how did Sugar form? Bob Mould: I guess it all started in 1990 when I was wrapping up the tour for Black Sheets Of Rain
