Israel Quellet's second album for Sub Rosa is, once more, a mixed bag of short pieces going in various directions, for various instrumentations. The menu includes pieces for church organ (gothic, gloomy, almost Magma-like), for percussion and saturation (extremely noisy but tightly controlled), for a fitness rower (more rambunctious noise), for footsteps and knocks on stairs (very early musique concrète-sounding), and one piece featuring vocals - a distorted recitation accompanied by percussion, organ, and miscellaneous sounds. Schools of thoughts are ignored, eras clash, the needles are glued in the red, and the listener comes out of Soni Sclavus with the feeling of having experienced something special and truly original. No, "original" is not the right word, for it implies something new, and Quellet isn't doing anything that hasn't be done before.

Complex and mysterious, SONI SCLAVUS by the Israël Quellet shows its neo-classical leanings on its face, with each track title explaining exactly what you should expect. "Pour Orgue Et Percussions," for example, combines crashing cymbals and timpanis with a stately pipe organ to result in a strange religious experience. Even the organ alone on "Pour Orgue" manages to be quite distressing, but not as distressing as the pure industrial chaos of "Pour Rameur De Fitness." The organ returns as a low throb, accompanied by fragments voices on "Pour Orgue, Voix," but the chaos also returns on "Pour Percussions Et Saturation" and "Pour Caisse Claire, Balais Et Saturation," both of which are all rhythmic throbs and granular sound. The musique concrete of "Pour Pas Et Frappes Sur Marches D'escalier, Gaz Carbonique Expulsé" is like a Foley artist's dream, a rhythmic contemplation comparable to the Broadway show Stomp. "Les Bouffisures, Les Croupissures" has an ominous quality to it, as if the sound itself is meant to suffocate. The second "Pour Orgue" concentrates as much on the wheezing and the exhalations of the organ as the actual notes. A challenging listen, but also rewarding.
