Thelonious Monk & John Coltrane - Monk And Trane mp3 album

Thelonious Monk with John Coltrane is a 1961 album by Thelonious Monk issued on Jazzland Records, a subsidiary of Riverside Records. It consists of material recorded four years earlier when Monk worked extensively with John Coltrane, issued after Coltrane had become a leader and jazz star in his own right. The 2010 CD reissue was assembled by the label with material from three different sessions.

John Coltrane - Tenor Saxophone Thelonious Monk - Piano with: On Side 1: Wilbur Ware - Bass Shadow Wilson - Drums (Probably recorded Spring, 1958). On Sides 2 and 3: Ray Copeland - Trumpet Gigi Gryce - Alto Saxophone Coleman Hawkins - Tenor Saxophone Wilbur Ware - Bass Art Blakey - Drums (Rhythm section does not play on Abide with me ) (Recorded June 26, 1957). On Monk’s Mood : Wilbur Ware - Bass (Recorded April 16, 1957). From the Liner Notes: One of the most important associations in the entire History of jazz was the late-Fifties teaming of Monk and Coltrane, primarily in Monk’s quartet at the Five Spot’s Cafe in New York. Unfortunately, their work together was not recorded in depth-but this reissue combines all of their joint studio efforts (including an alternate take and an excerpt) in an album that is clearly of major significance. Distributed by Fantasy Records, Berkeley, Ca.

Monk seems at his quirky best here, bouncing around the keyboard on Epistrophy, while Coltrane alternates on tracks between ripping it up and playing it smooth and glorious. This is a great performance from two of the best musicians in jazz history. I'm on maybe ten listens so far and it's impossible to pick a stand-out track or two.

The John Coltrane on this date is far more assured than he had been four months earlier on the Five Spot date and on the initial Prestige side Thelonious Monk with John Coltrane. He'd been with Monk for four months and had absorbed his complex, multivalent musical system completely. It's clear from the opening track, "Monk's Mood," where the pair play in duet, that Coltrane is confident and moving into his own. Monk feels that confidence with his nearly Baroque entrance on the tune

Coltrane acknowledged Monk’s strong influence on him in a 1960 Downbeat interview quoted in those original liner notes. So while this deluxe, imaginatively packaged 3 LP set, the first from Craft Recordings-a new label from Concord Bicycle Music-does stretch to fill three records with a false start of Monk’s Mood, multiple takes of Crepuscule with Nellie (five in all) and even one track on which Monk famously doesn’t play, these are the only studio recordings Monk made. with Coltrane during the period where Coltrane bloomed.

It's '57 and the legendary, and legendarily under-recorded, Thelonious Monk Quartet with John Coltrane, match fit after four months of solid work at the Five Spot, is taped at a benefit gig at Carnegie Hall by Voice Of America, with state-of-the-art recording equipment, for a future broadcast which never happens. Not just for completists, this album ranks as pretty much essential listening for Monk and Coltrane fans both. Track Listing: Monk's Mood; Evidence; Crepuscule With Nellie; Nutty; Epistrophy; Bye-Ya; Sweet & Lovely; Blue Monk; Epistrophy (incomplete).
