Also, Genesis were moving away from the barbed pop of the first LP and returning to elastic numbers that showcased their instrumental prowess, and they sounded more forceful and unified as a band than they had since Foxtrot. Not that this album is quite as memorable as Foxtrot or Selling England, largely because its songs aren't as immediate or memorable: apart from "Dance on a Volcano," this is about the sound of the band playing, not individual songs, and it succeeds on that level quite wildly - to the extent that it proved to longtime fans that Genesis could.

It was not, however, the first Genesis song on which Phil Collins sang lead. That was "For Absent Friends" from the album Nursery Cryme in 1971. This song was written by keyboard player Tony Banks. His lyrics were based on William Golding's 1955 novel, The Inheritors. He recalled: "It's about a race who were on earth before man and it's the story of the last survivor of this race. Joshua from Twin Cities, MnThe cover of the "Trick of the Tail" album features caricature drawings of various characters from the album's eight songs, including the beast from the title track. Robb from Hamburg, NyUntil you said that, I didn't even realize that was Phil, but now I can clearly tell it is him. Kent Lyle from Palo Alto, CaA song about a devil-like creature who leaves his city of gold and is captured by humans and kept in a cage as a freak-show creature.

A Trick of the Tail" is a song by the progressive rock band Genesis taken from the album of the same name. It was written by the band's keyboard player Tony Banks. A Trick of the Tail" was the first Genesis song to be accompanied by a promotional video, and the first single featuring Phil Collins as the band's lead vocalist. Previously their drummer, contributing very occasional vocals, Collins was now the band's lead singer, while continuing to play drums and percussion

Listen to A Trick Of The Tail right now. Released on 2 February 1976, it was a record that saw Messrs Collins, Banks, Hackett and Rutherford following their best instincts. It’s as strong as it ever was, Banks told Melody Maker as A Trick Of The Tail emerged, following that with a bold statement. If it isn’t, we won’t play again. If it’s not as good, there’s no point in playing. The closing ‘Los Endos’ was the only other track ascribed to all four members, but Banks emerged as the most productive individual: two of the others were by the keyboard player with Rutherford, one with Collins, another with Hackett, and Banks wrote two on his own.

Reviews about Genesis - A Trick Of The Tail (10):
Moronydit
A serviceable album of classic era prog rock from one of the genre's most prominent bands. "Dance On A Volcano" is a superb opener. "Ripples" is the real standout here though. A masterpiece! It's not the band's best but never stopped me from listening to it 100 times!

Just for Mad Man Moon and Entangled, they're beautiful. Very close to selling England by the pound in terms of quality and emotion.

Does anyone know the exact release date of this album?

I have a copy with matrix numbers CDS 4001 A//1 and CDS 4001*B//1 yet the label states "All tracks Fuse Music Ltd" not "All tracks Copyright Control". Also, the gatefold states the 70 Old Compton Street address, not the Soho Square one. So, is mine a first press?

d-niceguy15 Me too ... the exact same mix of info. Is this a first press? Many thanks

I have a copy of Trick of the Tail with 2 tracks that are not as printed on the label or cover. Side A-1 On Broadway and Side B-4 Carpet Crawlers. Atco label. Can anyone tell me about this. Thanks

Had Peter Gabriel not left Genesis, I sincerely doubt that they would have become the super group they evolved into, as Gabriel would not have ventured down the same streets, knocking on every door, offering up something for everyone, as Phil Collins seemed destined to do. What Peter Gabriel saw fit to walk away from was a studio littered with complete, nearly complete, and brilliant snippets that merely needed to be fleshed out, and of course now those who remained needed to find the right voice to breathe life into this material in order to master one of the greatest bodies of work Genesis ever laid down … leaving me to wonder what Gabriel would have done at this stage. Though with that in mind, the music gathered together for this outing seemed to benefit from a voice that was a bit more timid, a bit unsteady, and laced with warmer tones, presented in a manner where the vocals [or narration] didn’t guide the songs, but rather the instrumentation did. Nearly all of the tracks were radio friendly [back when there was actual radio], and all of the songs were presented with a uniqueness that sincerely redefined the band, almost drawing a line of demarcation between what had been, and what they became, where it was easy to scratch your head and wonder if there had been merely two bands going by the name of Genesis. One of the most charming aspects to this album is how different each song is from every other, and even more so, how flawlessly each track plays off of and morphs in an undefined manner with the others, bespeaking of the brilliant instrumentation that heretofore seemed less idealistically important, where an enchanting fable filled with characters and animals with human characteristics weave magic spells, etching a place into everyone’s heart. Trick Of The Tail is a one off, Genesis would never again achieve anything as stunning as this bit of wanderlust. And of course, all of this happened because Genesis was able to marry those early experimental concepts with pop hooks and a creativity that was breezy and essentially created for a contextual simplicity that comes off as clean clear and full of life. The Fun Facts: Nearly 400 vocalists auditioned for the spot left vacant by Peter Gabriel.A Squonk is a mythological American creature, who hunters claim evades capture by dissolving completely into a pool of tears and bubbles when cornered. Mr. J.P. Wanting of Pennsylvania was rumored to have coaxed one into a sack, though on the way home, the bag lightened, and when he peered inside there was nothing. The legend also goes on to imply that the creature’s skin was ill-fitting, and covered with blemishes that made it ashamed of its appearance, spending nearly all of its time in hiding and weeping. Moonlighted nights are best for the Squonk to hunt, though it fears going out, afraid that it will somehow catch a glimpse of itself.“Mad Man Moon” - People have theorized for thousands of years that the Moon has all kinds of impacts on us, saying that it affects fertility, crime rates, dog attacks, and increases blood loss during surgery. “It must be a full Moon,” they say, or “Full moon tomorrow night! All the crazies will be out!” Historians suspect it’s possible that the brightness of a full moon disturbed people’s sleep schedules, meaning that the full Moon was a high time for people to be active at night, favoring work, travel, or even crime by the light of the full moon.Review by Jenell Kesler

Please help me find my release. The code is 6369 974 on Charisma. The label states the year 1975 and there are only 3 releases of this year, none of which match the label. There is no 'Made in...', the only clue is inside the gatefold sleeve on which it says: Manufactured by Charisma Records Ltd,37 Soho Sq., London W1, Manufactured & distributed by Phonogram Ltd..'. So it seems to be UK. Or have I actually found a new release?! Thanks for your help. P.S. I'm new here

Even though the label says 1975 it might not have been released then. The 1976 releases also say 1975 on the label. Best bet is use your catalog number to search and then look at the images, matrix information to see if one matches yours. There are 38 with that number listed today, it could be any of them.

I have an original US issue Atco SD 36-129 from 1976. It has 2 side two labels, yellow Atco labels, no side one label. Is this a super rare misprint? I've been scouring the internet trying to find any info and haven't seen anything mentioned about this. Any help is appreciated, please message me if you know anything about this.
