Sir Leslie Colin "Les" Patterson (born 1 April 1942) is a fictional character created and portrayed by Australian comedian Barry Humphries. Obese, lecherous and offensive, Patterson is Dame Edna Everage's exact opposite: she is female, refined, Protestant and from Melbourne; he is male, uncouth, Roman Catholic and from Sydney. Patterson's humour abounds in such a wide range of racist and sexual stereotypes that it would offend almost anyone who takes it at face value.
Dame Edna Everage is a character created and performed by Australian comedian Barry Humphries, known for her lilac-coloured or "wisteria hue" hair and cat eye glasses or "face furniture", her favourite flower, the gladiolus ("gladdies") and her boisterous greeting: "Hello, Possums!" As Dame Edna, Humphries has written several books including an autobiography, My Gorgeous Life, appeared in several films and hosted several television shows (on which Humphries has also appeared as himself and other alter.
Dame Edna Everage, housewife superstar, far right, continues to flirt with treason by flaunting her fake title - but her creator, Barry Humphries, is awarded a genuine CBE in today's birthday honours. The actor and author who once greeted the Queen's arrival at a golden jubilee concert with the joyful cry "the jubilee girl is here, possums!", heard the news as he came off stage in Australia. I'm deeply honoured," he said. At last I can address Sir Les Patterson and Dame Edna Everage on an improved footing.

Barry Humphries got big break with role in Oliver! stage show in 1960 in London. Famous characters include housewife Dame Enda Everage and Sir Les Patterson. Steve Coogan, Billy Connolly and Peter Cook are some of favourite comedians. Barry will be interrogated be Rob Brydon at London Palladium on Sunday night. Or perhaps folk are afraid that he might metamorphose into the most famous of his alter egos, Dame Edna Everage, the housewife superstar who became a megastar and is now, in her own humble estimation, a ‘gigastar’. Comedian Barry Humphries' most famous alter ego is Dame Edna Everage - the housewife who is never lost for words and who became a megastar (pictured). After all, Edna could verbally tear anyone to shreds; she is never lost for words.
