Tommy Shaw was born in Montgomery, Alabama, and played with many local bands in his early years. He left Montgomery after attending Robert E. Lee High School to join The Smoke Ring and then MSFunk, a Chicago-managed outfit that he played with for three years, which gave him a chance to be noticed by Styx during a two-week club gig in Chicago.
What If. "Please retry". WHAT IF is a clever turn of pondering the questions and existance of life and living. About whom he could be singing is anyone's guess and Tommy's secret. This song could be as much about himself as it could be about Dennis DeYoung or about Pamela Shoemaker. What if, the title track, was the lead off single, for the cd, and the soundtrack, REMO WILLIAMS THE ADVENTURE BEGINS. The single is not the best song on this cd, it has a good guitar line thru it, but the song sags in the middle, and never recovers from it. By using this has the first single to lead off the cd, and it being a weak song, this in turned hurt the cd.

What if what if you find you made a mistake What if what if it's worth the chance That your'e taking. I would never want to see you standing In the line of fire You're the one who has to come to grips With your own desires. Do you hear what I'm saying Am I even getting through Are you so far gone I can't talk to you. I could tell you what you want to hear But is it really what you need Now it's time to stand On your own two feet.
