Peter, Paul and Mary was an American folk group formed in New York City in 1961, during the American folk music revival phenomenon. The trio was composed of tenor Peter Yarrow, baritone Noel Paul Stookey and contralto Mary Travers. The group's repertoire included songs written by Yarrow and Stookey, early songs by Bob Dylan as well as covers of other folk musicians. After the death of Travers in 2009, Yarrow and Stookey continued to perform as a duo under their individual names.

Peter, Paul, and Mary are still great after all these years, and it was great to bring this music back into our collection. 4 people found this helpful. I was never a hard rock fan and folk music appealed to me then and now. I like most genres of music and enjoy a lot of different performers. From Enya to Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, I love many singers and their music. I am not interested in most rock music and prefer instrumental or soothing vocals. I think that is part of the reason why I like this disc. First released on LP in 1970, this greatest hits album contains several of the big hits by Peter, Paul, and Mary, the folk trio from the '60's whose classic works include "Puff the Magic Dragon" and their covers of Pete Seeger's "If I Had a Hammer," John Denver's "Leaving on a Jet Plane," and Dylan's "Blowin' in the Wind.

Peter, Paul and Mary were part of the 1960s folk revival, but they can trace their roots and inspiration back to music and events from the late '40s, and the founding of the Weavers. In 1948, the musical and political left had been galvanized behind the presidential campaign of former Vice President Henry Wallace and his running mate, Senator Glen Taylor. In the wake of that ticket's defeat that year, in the course of trying to pick up the pieces, singer/composers Lee Hays and Pete Seeger, whose history together went back to the early '40s, and a group called the Almanac Singers, joined with Fred Hellerman and Ronnie Gilbert in forming the Weavers.

Peter, Paul and Mary. The trio's second album is a little less distinctive than its predecessor, which doesn't mean that it isn't a beautiful record - just less obviously compelling in its melodies, and perhaps slightly less optimistic in mood.

The trio Peter, Paul and Mary (often PP&M) is an American musical group that was one of the most successful folk-singing groups of the 1960s. The trio comprises Peter Yarrow, Noel Paul Stookey, and Mary Travers. The group was created by manager Albert Grossman, who sought to create a folk "supergroup" by bringing together "a tall blonde (Travers), a funny guy (Stookey), and a good looking guy (Yarrow).

Mary Travers of Peter, Paul and Mary Dies at 72. By WILLIAM GRIMESSEPT. Mary Travers, whose ringing, earnest vocals with the folk trio Peter, Paul and Mary made songs like Blowin’ in the Wind, If I Had a Hammer and Where Have All the Flowers Gone? enduring anthems of the 1960s protest movement, died on Wednesday at Danbury Hospital in Connecticut. She was 72 and lived in Redding, Conn. The singers also scored big hits with pleasing songs like the whimsical Puff the Magic Dragon and John Denver’s plaintive Leaving on a Jet Plane. Their sound may have been commercial and safe, but early on their politics were somewhat risky for a group courting a mass audience.
